Vision Research

In 2014 I joined the Rokers Vision Lab at the University of Wisconsin. I created animations to demonstrate particular optical effects during presentations and assisted graduate researchers in illustrating their findings.

WHITE MATTER PATHWAYS

This animation demonstrates the white matter pathways of the brain, charted by using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to track water diffusion in small cross sections. Neurons, the cells of the brain, have a Myelin Sheath, a coating of fat-containing cells that insulate their axons from electrical activity, and water moves more easily along these barriers than across them.

This animation was made in collaboration with graduate researcher Brian Allen of the Rokers Vision Laboratory at the University of Wisconsin.

THE PACMAN EFFECT

This animation demonstrates the "Pacman Effect." Also called the "chaser illusion," it combines the phi phenomenon illusion, an afterimage effect, and Troxler's fading. If you focus on the center, you will see a yellow dot filling the successive empty spaces and 'eating' the blue dots.

This animation was created for Dr. Bas Rokers of the University of Wisconsin to highlight limitations of human eyesight in the operation of automobiles.

THE BARBERPOLE EFFECT

This animation demonstrates the "Barberpole Effect." A limited aperture with an elongated axis causes the apparent motion of lines to change direction. Looking at the moving lines through small openings will make the lines seemingly shift in direction. Asphalt and yellow lines are in reference to road markings.
